Carperby Sports Pavilion Case Study
For a sports and community building project in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales which received sponsorship from leading confectionery company Mars and was then filmed for a television ad, sustainability and thermal efficiency was at the forefront of the design. To meet these requirements, high performance floor and wall insulation from leading PIR manufacturer Celotex met the challenge.

Football Association sponsor Mars chose the village of Carperby because they were impressed with the spirit and determination shown by the local community and could see the potential the new pavilion would have in getting more people playing football. Following five years of fundraising and a number of grants, Mars helped with the final tranche of funding to enable the new pavilion to be completed.
Designed and project managed by sports facility specialists, Steve Wells Associates, as part of a community involvement scheme, the provision of sustainable energy to the pavilion in Carperby will reduce carbon emissions, lower running costs and generate an income to help manage the new sports pavilion. Thermal performance outcomes also necessitated the adoption of a fabric first approach in the building of the facility with Celotex insulation chosen to be the most preferable PIR product solution.
Built by local contractor Scott Stephenson, 70mm thick Celotex CW4000 was used for the cavity block walls of the pavilion. Made from PIR with foil facers for improved emissivity within cavity air spaces, the product offers an excellent lambda of 0.022 W/mK and can achieve up to 100% more thermal efficiency than many mineral fibre products - delivering better U-values with even thinner solutions.
Durable and extremely lightweight, the Celotex CW4000 boards are available in a range of thicknesses from 25mm to 100mm at a convenient board size of 1,200mm x 450mm and are easy to cut to fit using hand tools making them ideal for a speedy application. Once fitted between the brick and block wall, the boards were secured in place using cavity tie clips, creating a high performance thermal envelope.
Meeting strict levels of energy efficiency, the Celotex CW4000 boards have been independently assessed by BRE Global and confirmed as achieving a low environmental impact, through its BRE Approved Environmental Profile. Awarded an A+ rating when compared to the BRE Green Guide, it proved the ideal choice for achieving the building's environmental targets. Celotex CW4000 is also the first ever PIR insulation product to receive approval from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) - the UK's leading impartial organisation helping people to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
To insulate the floor and to avoid loss of heat, 300m2 of 75mm thick Celotex GA4000 was laid on the structural base then covered in poured concrete. Suitable for use in a number of applications including roof, wall and floor systems, select Celotex products achieve an A+ rating when compared to the BRE Green Guide as well as achieving BBA certification, and impressively offering the broadest range of solutions from 12mm - 200mm thick.
The tight ten week schedule had to fit in with the Mars ad filming schedules and the builders had the added challenge of working during one of the harshest winters in years. Now complete, this environmentally friendly community pavilion is testament to what can be achieved when using thermally efficient insulation from Celotex to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs.
