Hadleigh Swimming Pool

Over thirty years old and in need of major improvement works, Hadleigh Swimming Pool in Suffolk required remodelling and refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards. To meet the high specification and modern design, a high performance insulation was required that would deliver excellent U-values whilst using a reduced thickness and amount of materials within the wall applications.

Using cavity wall insulation for energy efficient indoor swimming pools

Products Used: Celotex CW4000
Sector: Retail / Leisure

The objective

Over thirty years old and in need of major improvement works, Hadleigh Swimming Pool in Suffolk required remodelling and refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards. With a strict budget and high thermal performance a priority, the client’s architect required each building element to deliver unrivalled excellence in terms of energy efficiency, long term performance and value for money.

The challenge

Delivered by main contractor R.G. Carter and designed by Archial for Babergh District Council, the project saw the creation of improved community facilities in addition to a refurbished swimming pool. As part refurbishment and part new-build, the insulation specification was crucial to the success of the project.

To meet the high specification and modern design, a high performance insulation was required that would deliver excellent U-values whilst using a reduced thickness and amount of materials within the wall applications.

The solution

For the walls of the new build element – 610m2 of 100mm thick Celotex CW4000 insulation was chosen to achieve budgetary and thermal performance targets. Aimed specifically at partial cavity wall installations, Celotex CW4000 is available in a range of thicknesses from 25mm to 100mm and is proven to reduce heating needs, carbon emissions and energy costs.

For the steel frame with masonry infill structure, the versatility of Celotex’ CW4000 boards made installation simple and efficient. Specified at a thickness of 100mm, it is extremely lightweight and easy to cut to fit using hand tools. After being cut to size, the boards were slotted between the brick and block built cavity wall before being secured into place using innovative cavity tie clips.

The outcome

Made from PIR with low emissivity foil facings to reflect radiant heat and improve thermal resistance, CW4000 offers improved thermal insulation performance within cavity air spaces. It achieves an excellent lambda of 0.022W/mK and can deliver 100% more thermal efficiency than many mineral fibre products.

Now complete, the specification and installation of Celotex CW4000 insulation helped the project to meets both thermal and budgetary targets, whilst for years to come the Hadleigh community can enjoy much-improved facilities and the building and its owners will benefit from exceptional energy efficiency.

Key considerations

When using Celotex products, you need to satisfy yourself that use of the product meets all relevant national Building Regulations and guidance as well as local, national and other applicable standards relevant for your construction or application, including requirements in relation to fire and applicable height restrictions. In addition to the product datasheet, please refer to the following product documents:

Celotex products should not be used in the external walls of buildings over 11 metres in height. Recent changes to Building Regulations mean that only non-combustible insulation or insulation of limited combustibility should be used in buildings of that height.
